Preventing fraud: Online merchant guide

become a Visa merchant Verfied by Visa

When conducting transactions in the virtual world, it is important for the merchant to be able to answer a key question: "Is the cardholder who is participating in this transaction a legitimate cardholder?"

To be able to answer this question and benefit from maximum security, Visa recommends all Visa merchants implement the authentication solutions currently available in the market. These solutions provide benefits for all participants in an electronic transaction and are one of the most powerful weapons merchants have to prevent and fight fraud when accepting payment cards online. For more detailed information about Visa recommendations and the best technology available for Visa merchants, please contact your financial institution.

Visa is always working with industry experts, Acquirer institutions and merchants to identify certain characteristics that may indicate a fraudulent transaction and help Visa merchants minimize risks.

Visa recommends you follow these practices at all times to reduce your exposure to fraud:

Remain alert to detect any transaction that exhibits several of the following characteristics:
  • First purchase
  • Purchases for unusually high amounts of large quantities of the same product
  • Orders that request immediate delivery
  • Orders shipped to international addresses

Develop and maintain an up-to-date customer database to identify unusual behavior patterns and variations in spending habits, such as:
  • Transactions charged to cards with similar numbers
  • Orders to be shipped to the same address, charged to multiple cards
  • Multiple transactions charged to the same card within a short period of time
  • Multiple transactions with a single card or similar cards that have only one billing address and several shipping addresses

Leverage the excellent risk management tools Visa makes available to you:
  • Use the Card Verification Value 2 -CVV2-, a 3-digit code that is printed on the reverse of the Visa card. Forward this code as part of the information on the authorization request.
  • Request additional information from your customers. This will make it more difficult for criminals and impostors to impersonate legitimate cardholders and hide their true identity
  • If an order seems suspicious for any reason, contact the customer to confirm the order before shipping the items.
